Glossary of Spiritual Wisdom

From the teachings of A.H. Almaas

What is Cosmic Consciousness?

When Cosmic Consciousness arises, it feels familiar. It reminds one of normal personal consciousness, except that it is boundless.

— A. H. Almaas

The cosmic consciousness is a unitary field that possesses variations and differentiations. Our conceptual mind abstracts these differentiations, labels them, and then believes they exist on their own, instead of recognizing that they are manifestations of one field of existence. Our mind creates the universe we normally view by reifying the already existing differences in the unified field of consciousness.

Diamond Approach Teachings About: Cosmic Consciousness

Characteristics of Cosmic Consciousness

Cosmic Consciousness has the following characteristics: It is a Presence. It is a very soft Presence; gentle, delicate, smooth and flowing. One is like a wisp, like a delicate and soft cloud. It is conscious. This Presence is experienced as the very stuff of consciousness. It feels like light itself, but more like the substance of light, not as rays of light, but as a flow of light, as an ocean of light. It is "light upon light". It is Love. This conscious substance of light is soft, gentle, tender and sweet. It is loving. It is as if one becomes an ocean of Love that is conscious. So one can call it conscious love, or the Loving Light. In traditional literature this is sometimes referred to as Universal Love or Christ Love. It is both Consciousness and Love in the same Presence. It is boundless. There is no sense of individual or personal boundaries in this aspect of Being. The conscious and loving Presence is felt to pervade everything, to extend infinitely, as a homogeneous soft medium The Cosmic Consciousness is responsible for the appearance of form. This can be seen in a deeper experience and appreciation of this aspect of Being. One realizes that this conscious Presence is not only one's own nature and substance, but that it is the nature and substance of all existence, including the physical universe.

Cosmic Consciousness and the Experience of the Body

When there is transcendence of the body through disidentification from the self-representations based on it, the Cosmic Consciousness manifests. One realizes that one is not only not the body, but that one is a boundless consciousness. One becomes aware of being a Presence that transcends the body in a very specific manner. One feels one is a Presence that is conscious, but that is not centered in the body. In fact, one becomes conscious of the body in a total way, as if from outside. One experiences oneself not as in the body, but as containing the body within oneself. One is a boundless and infinite consciousness that contains the body.

Cosmic Consciousness is a Unitary Field that Possesses Variations and Differentiations

Different sources refer to this conscious existence differently: some call it God, others call it universal or cosmic consciousness, still others call it boundless presence or Being. We don’t have to call it anything. When we do call it something, we are creating the first word to describe the beginning of experience. This word is something like “existence” or “being.” It’s the beginning of the big bang. We are aware of existence as a boundless ocean of conscious light, a boundless ocean of sensation. Everything else is a product of the mind. Everything else is a differentiation within this cosmic consciousness. The mind does not create these objects completely on its own. When we finally become aware of this process of reifying, and experience the world independently of our mental concepts, we realize that we are in touch with this pure cosmic consciousness all the time. We are never out of touch with this consciousness. Everything manifests the one consciousness. This pure presence of consciousness creates every sensation we are aware of all that we see, all that we hear. Pure consciousness is one. There are no entities separate from pure consciousness or separate from each other. So, to dissolve mind in heart means simply to allow the awareness of pure consciousness.

Effect of Non-differentiated Consciousness

Primordial consciousness, the non-differentiated knowingness, is the freedom that is needed for a state of the mind to be experienced in its most expanded form. It is the element of expansion into universality. For example, someone might experience the clear mind, but if they cannot experience non-differentiated consciousness then the mind is restricted to simply clarity in the head. If cosmic consciousness has been experienced then the mind is expanded, and pure consciousness is integrated into the clear mind so that it is experienced as pure clarity, pure transparency, boundless and centerless.

Experiencing the World Independently of Mental Concepts

When we finally become aware of this process of reifying, and experience the world independently of our mental concepts, we realize that we are in touch with this pure cosmic consciousness all the time. We are never out of touch with this consciousness. Everything manifests the one consciousness. This pure presence of consciousness creates every sensation we are aware of, all that we see, all that we hear. Pure consciousness is one. There are no entities separate from pure consciousness or separate from each other. So to dissolve mind in heart means simply to allow the awareness of pure consciousness.

How is Cosmic Consciousness Experienced?

When there is transcendence of the body through disidentification from the self-representations based on it, the Cosmic Consciousness manifests. One realizes that one is not only not the body, but that one is a boundless consciousness. One becomes aware of being a Presence that transcends the body in a very specific manner. One feels one is a Presence that is conscious, but that is not centered in the body. In fact, one becomes conscious of the body in a total way, as if from outside. One experiences oneself not as in the body, but as containing the body within oneself. One is a boundless and infinite consciousness that contains the body.

Realizing One’s Personal Relation to Cosmic Consciousness

Here one realizes one’s personal relation to the Cosmic Consciousness. There is the definite experience of being an individual rooted in the loving presence. There is no sense of boundaries. One is a presence, a personal presence, but with the quality of the Loving Light. Not only does one feel and see the personal loving presence as directly connected to the boundless Cosmic Consciousness, but one also feels oneself to be a personal expression of the divine presence, and still part of it. When there is focus of attention on the personal presence one feels oneself to be an individual continuous with the cosmic presence. When the attention is focused on the cosmic presence one feels oneself to be the divine infinite presence. One is both the infinite and the individual. This is a very beautiful and fulfilled state. One feels oneself as a fullness grounded in the boundless presence. The mind is crystal clear, and one is a rounded fullness, bathed in the delicate tenderness of the conscious Cosmic Presence, and connected to it from one’s depth and center. One feels connected to the Cosmic Presence, supported by it and enveloped by its lovingness.

The Cosmic Individual

The moment you go from ego to non-ego you experience not only that you are one with all human beings but that you are one with everything. You realize that the consciousness that is realized, that has been compacted with boundaries, has no boundaries. It is everywhere. Consciousness is the basic substance and nature of everything. The truth you realize then is that who you are is not the product of your childhood, is not your body, is not a sense of limited individuality. You are something that is everything, and you are seeing now the nature of everything, not only on the essential level, but on the level of being itself, on a nondifferentiated level, a non-separated level. This does not mean though that you are no longer an individual. You will not lose individuality in the way you might imagine; the individuality will simply be one facet of who you are. It’s like the example of the hand. In the beginning you think you are the finger, moving around, doing things. When your knowledge goes beyond the individual, beyond the ego, you find out you are the hand. You don't lose the fingers by being the hand. The fingers are still there, the individuality is still there operating; however, it is a part of something larger. And you are that something larger. At the same time, you are also the individual. Your attention is sometimes the finger and other times the totality of the hand. Then you live as what is called a cosmic individual.

The Inner Nature of Everything

At the beginning one experiences Cosmic Consciousness as pervading everything. After a while one learns that it is the inner nature of everything; that everything is a manifestation of this consciousness, as individual multifarious forms. This conscious Presence is not only one's Presence that is within, or transcending the body, but is the very stuff of the body, and of all physical reality.

Universal Love is Also Known as Cosmic Consciousness

Universal love is conscious and loving at the same time. It is also known as universal consciousness or cosmic consciousness. Universal love is a unification of all aspects of essence. When you experience universal love, you understand the action of love. An action is loving when it has all aspects of essence. A loving action is a gentle action when gentleness is needed, a firm action when firmness is needed, a compassionate action when compassion is needed, yielding when yielding is needed. Whatever is needed is present—and in the correct balance—depending upon the situation. This means that for us to operate from the perspective of universal love, all the essential aspects must be free, and available without blockage. We see that the action of love is balanced and the manifestation of love is balanced. Whatever is needed is brought forth. Universal love has power, harmony and balance. The loving action is a balancing and harmonizing action. Universal love is mysterious: the mystery is that the abundance, the cosmic universal goodness is actually the expression and the radiance of the harmony of Being. The mystery is also that essence in all its aspects, can be present in a harmonious totality. Universal love is an expression of the harmony of the totality. Everything is in harmony with everything else. Nothing is excluded. Your will is in harmony with your compassion. Your compassion is in harmony with your joy. Your joy is in harmony with your anger. Your anger is in harmony with your body. Your body is in harmony with your ego. Your ego is in harmony with other people. There is no conflict anywhere. Everything fits and functions as a togetherness, as a oneness. That oneness is you. That oneness is the true feeling of who you are. You are not the personality, or any particular aspect of essence. You are the whole thing, including emptiness and space, and you experience everything in complete harmony.

What are the Characteristics of Cosmic Consciousness?

When the Individual is absorbed Into Cosmic Consciousness

So to understand the relation of the mind to the cosmos, we must first understand the nature of the mind, which we call space. Space cannot be known completely until a sense of separate mental consciousness is eliminated. When you as a separate person, as an individual, are completely absorbed into the universality of cosmic consciousness, then the mirror consciousness, the clarity, experiences the void completely and boundlessly.
