Human beings have a powerful and innate drive to seek love, connection, and union. We have an equally powerful drive to become the unique individuals we’re capable of being. And from the perspective of the ego identity, these two drives are incompatible.
We experience this conflict when we have wishes and desires that are different from those we want to be in union with. Do we accommodate them? Do we insist on getting our own way? Do we constantly try to find a way to compromise? Or do we get engaged in an endless “battle of wills?”
It seems these are our only choices. If we assert our own will too much, we risk losing our connection. If we suppress our own wishes, we lose ourselves and undermine our sense of being a separate individual.
Our egoic identity has no solution to this. But in the depths of our being, each of us is a unique expression of an indivisible unity. Neither is lost, and there is no conflict between them.
